What Is the Best Data Backup Plan for Your Business?

Nothing is more devastating and frustrating to a programmer then to inadvertently delete his files after hours of hard work. Nightmares of stress and confusion can begin with a small mistake magnified by the power and speed of a computer system. Days, weeks and even months of work can be gone in an instant.

Have you ever had that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you know that you have just deleted a complex file containing information that was not backed up? A variety of feelings will begin to erupt such as feelings of anger, denial, worry and fear. As you rush about looking for every scrap of paper which you may have mercifully printed out on an earlier occasion, your fear will grow. People ask, "What's wrong?" and try to reassure you that it is not the end of the world, the company or your job. But you know the truth and you don't want to face it.

I don't want this to happen to you. Here are three cases and methods of protecting yourself from this kind of disaster. Hopefully you will never have to experience the sick feeling of losing files again.

What Is the Best Data Backup Plan for Your Business?

Files are most often lost by inadvertently deleting or overwriting one or more files on your system or server. This problem can be protected against quite easily by doing online backups of files that you are working on. Many software packages and programs will automatically backup every few minutes or even seconds, files that are currently being changed. This is great but don't count on this form of backup to save the day if you make a mistake and delete the file or directory after you have left the program. This form of backup is only useful in the event of a system crash. To prevent this kind of issue it is important to backup regularly. Every few minutes or every few hours, backup the files that you are working on. If you don't think you could recover after losing a file then it is already past the time when the backup should be done. The best thing to do is to simply create a backup directory and copy the files into that directory. Remember files can be lost when copying or deleting which will defeat the purpose so always copy to a new directory. These days disk space is cheep so feel free to keep as many old copies as you like. When creating the backup directory it is best to place it on a different physical drive. Often disk drive failures are the main cause of file loss resulting on requiring a recent backup. It would be sad if the backup was on the same drive as the original data. Sometimes an entire workstation can be hit by flood or electrical power surges which will destroy all the drives in the box. If possible copy the files threw the network or internet to another box or server. Even better if the box or server is off sight. Remember the idea here is that the backup is convenient and should only take a few seconds to perform. Files can be lost or corrupted through viruses or other more serious hardware issues. Full backups are necessary since often the user does not know which files have become corrupt. Since a full system backup is generally very time consuming it is not recommended that a backup of this nature should be performed too often. Consider how difficult and costly data loss over the period of time in your calculations to determine the frequency of backing up for the system failure contingency. For quickest full system backups consider using an external hard drive. Placing the drive in a fireproof box away from your computer system is recommended. If possible keep the backup off site but remember the security concerns of having all your information at the other location. Optical read/write drives are sufficient for many small business situations. They may take a bit longer to work with but may be a reasonable alternative. The third and most devastating situation is when the entire onsite system is destroyed. This happens most often through fire or flood and may result in both the backup and the original data files to be lost forever. Insurance may cover the physical loss but having your company fail due to loss of data is not something any small business owner would be willing to accept. Be sure to take a periodic full system backup of all your necessary data. It is best to test the backup on a complete offsite system as a beta site. If the unthinkable does happen you may find that you can be up and running in a matter of minutes. The backup files should be easy to retrieve from their offsite location, safety deposit box or home office. The last thing you want to be doing is trying to find and restore a system without a disaster plan in place. Have it ready! Even though this is rare it does happen more often than companies care to imagine.

Summary

Be sure to backup your files as you make significant changes. This backup plan should be quick and easy. For those rare days when everything goes wrong be sure to have a backup that is fairly up to date. Store this backup offsite and consider the security concerns of this form of backup.

Good luck and I hope you never have need for any of these backups but if you do I know you will be ready.

Access To The Hidden Partition Pqservice

Many laptops and computers comes in our days without recovery cd, the OS and driver are in hidden partition.

I will show you step by step how to unhide this partition. You will need to use PARTEDIT32.

Be aware that you can lose all your data in this operation, you should backup all your important things before.

Access To The Hidden Partition Pqservice

This, is working with acer aspire laptops and probably with a large variety of computer with hidden partition.

First boot in bios menu by pressing F2 key on boot,

disable the d2d recovery save and restart.

Now we will use PARTEDIT32 this nice freeware software will make a great job, it will allow you to make your partition visible in some clicks of mouse and on the fly under Windows XP.

Unzip and launch Partedit32. The user interface opens, simple but effective, if you have more than one hard disk, choose the one where your hidden partition is in the menu Hard Disk, then look at the column TYPE in your partitions table here is the type of your partition, you can reach a list of the various types of partition by clicking the button SET TYPE.

In this example with a Acer laptop the name of the partition is PQSERVICE and its type is 12, changes it by type 07, save and reboot.

After boot in windows go to my computer you will see a new disk named PQSERVICE you have done it.

In this disk you can find your drivers and windows files. We will explain in another review how to make a real windows cd with these data.

Since that you have finish with these data you just have to repeat the operation and change back the value.

How To Become a Computer Technician

So you want to be a Computer Technician, but you don't know how? Well guess what, I am going to tell you how.

First things first, I am blunt and to the point. I hate typing and thinking about grammar, that is why I went into the Technology field.

I have over 10 years experience in web design, computer networking, hardware, software, java programming, Apple & IBM (pc) format computers, telephone work, home theatres etc, etc, etc, & I make a lot of money doing. So basically I know what I am talking about & I am going to give you some advice that took me 10 long, hard years to learn.

How To Become a Computer Technician

1. MOST IMPORTANT: LEARN how to find the right answers. This can be true for ANY field, ANY person works in. You do not need to know everything, and guess what, if you spent the next 10 years reading, going to school & obtaining certifications, you still wouldn't know all there is to know in the field of Technology. But if you can figure out what resources will help you find a solution for you the fastest, then you are on your way.

2. Go to school and/or get certifications. Of course you need to learn about computers, software, hardware etc to become a computer technician. Find something that fits you, something that makes you excited to go. 4 year schools are not for every one, so make sure they are right for you if you choose to go. In my 4 years in college the only thing I learned to do is program at Level II in Java (a blind monkey could program at that level) and drink a lot of beer. 2 year schools are good because the get straight to the point about the actual jobs you will be doing out in the REAL world. (I was offered a teaching position at one of these 2 year schools at the ripe old age of 25, I laughed in their face & said no because of the salary they were offering). Certifications are important regardless if you get a 2 or 4 year degree. They tell other people that have NO CLUE about technology that you, indeed have a clue about technology

Did you follow that?

A couple of certifications that I highly recommend are the A+, Networking + and any Microsoft Support Certification.

3. Be patient, with yourself and the people you work with. You will always be learning if you become a computer technician. The average lifespan for a particular model of technology (ie computers) is about 2 years. Meaning as soon as you buy it, it is OLD. Things change everyday in Technology and you have to keep up with it!

4. Have a Positive Attitude! Remember, when people call you or you are dispatched out to work on someone's computer, TV etc, they usually are frustrated. Most people will try to fix the issue themselves before calling anyone because they are cheap. By the time you or I get there they are ready to cry. A positive and friendly attitude will go an EXTREMELY LONG WAY. You will be their savior and they will tell all their friends about you. This point might be the most difficult, especially in Technology because not very many people understand how it works and because our lives are so dependent on it.

That is it, 4 simple steps.

Can you handle it?

These are the 4 things I have tried to do over the last 10 years. Trust me, I am no genius, not by a long shot. But I figured out how to find the right answer for the problem, combined with an education, some certifications and the right attitude, I have people knocking down my door for my services.

Read this article a couple of times until this info really sinks in. This advice works so use it!

Stop sitting there and get busy!

For more information on How To Become a Computer Technician, check out a couple of this sites I have listed in my bio, those will help.

Good Luck!

New Computer - Old Email, or How to Back up and Transfer Your Email

If you have a brand new computer, or are thinking about buying one in the near future, one of the things that you will need to consider is how to transfer your emails from the old system to the new system.

At least once a week in my job as a help desk analyst, I am helping a customer set up Outlook Express or Outlook (there are other email clients that are used, but these two are the most popular) on their new computer. Once we are finished with the setup and they open it up to the Inbox the question is asked "where are my old emails?" The simple answer; "on your old computer". Then of course the follow up question is; "how do I get them to the new computer?"

Easy or Hard

New Computer - Old Email, or How to Back up and Transfer Your Email

The easiest way to do this is to back them up to an external hard drive or a compact disc before you make the switch to the new computer and then copy them over to the new computer in the exact same directory. The harder way is in the case of a crashed computer or the inability to access the files normally. I cover a bit of that in another article called 'Got Backups?' which you can find at my website.

Outlook Express

With Outlook Express your emails/email folders are stored on your hard drive in a directory that is buried way down deep in the Operating System. Instead of me giving you the full path to get there, it's easiest if you have Outlook Express open, click on Tools then Options.

Copy/Paste

Once you are here, click on the Maintenance tab and then click on the Store Folder button. This will pop another window with the location of your emails. Using your mouse, highlight the path and then right click and copy it.

You will then click on the Start button, then click Run, and then right click in the Open box and Paste the path. Click Ok.

This will open another window with your email files. Unless you have added other folders to your Outlook Express, the default folders will be here with a .dbx extension (Folders, Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, and Drafts).

Backup

If you are going to write these files to a CD, you can burn them at this time by using your favorite burning software (providing that you have a CD burner installed in your computer).

To copy them to an external hard drive, you must now connect that device to your computer, create a folder on that drive (I usually call it Email Backups), copy the files from the old computer then paste the files into the Email Backups folder.

Import

Once you have the files copied to the CD or external drive, then you will go to the new installation of Outlook Express and import the messages. It would be nice if you could just copy them to the new OE and be done, but Microsoft doesn't like you to do it that way.

Open up OE and then click on File, Import, Messages. This will open a new window called Outlook Express Import. Choose Microsoft Outlook Express 6 then click Next. Click in the circle that says 'Import mail from an OE6 store directory'. Click OK. Then click 'Browse' and navigate to and select the directory you have saved them to. Click OK. The next window will give you a list of all of the email folders you have previously saved. Keep 'All folders' selected and click Next.

This will begin the process of importing all of your 'old' emails into your 'new' Outlook Express. Once it has finished you will have all of your old emails back! Cool, huh?

Outlook

The procedure to save and then import your emails in Outlook is similar, but different.

To start with, Outlook uses a file extension called pst, or Personal Folder File. Don't ask me why it's called that. Call Bill Gates and ask him.

Export

You will start on the old computer and with Outlook open, click on File, then 'Import and Export'. This opens the Import and Export Wizard. Choose 'Export to a file' then click Next. Choose 'Personal Folder File' here and then click Next. In the Export Personal Folders dialogue box you have your choice of what you want to do. The easiest is to keep the default choice of just the inbox, but if you want your sent items and all the other folders, choose the top item (Personal Folders) and then choose the 'Include subfolders' option and then click Next.

The next window will have a default location listed
(usually C:Documents and Settings'your computer name'Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlookbackup.pst). I would suggest following the same procedure as for OE (see above). Then click 'Finish' and let it do it's thing.
Once you have your pst files backed up, move to the new computer and the import process will again be similar to OE.

Connect your external hard drive to your computer or insert the CD into the drive.

Import

Open Outlook, click on File, then Import and Export. In the Import and Export Wizard, this time choose 'Import from another program or file' then click Next. In the 'Import a File' window, scroll down and select Personal Folder File (.pst) and then click Next.

In the 'Import Personal Folders' window, click the Browse button and navigate out to the location of your backed up pst file, choose it and then click Next. Click 'Finish' and it will import all of your messages.

What is the Difference Between Data Retrieval and Information Retrieval?

As we are moving into the information age there is a need to secure data transmission and also to store and retrieve the data and the information. Information Retrieval Systems are increasing with the advent of the technology.

Let us fist talk about the basic differences between the data and the information.

DATA:

What is the Difference Between Data Retrieval and Information Retrieval?

It is the raw fact. For its retrieval it needs to be fully mentioned. If the file name or the document name is not known or is case sensitive, there are chances for the system to fail and do not retrieve any document. Examples of data are a piece of paper, a book, an algorithm. In the above examples their location is not known and hence the meaning cannot be given to this data

INFORMATION

Information is processed data. For its retrieval a partial information is enough for its evaluation. Hence, the system never fails. Examples of information are a piece of paper on a table, a book in the shelf, a bubble-sort algorithm. In the above examples their location are known and hence they have a specified meaning.

Data retrieving systems can be found in the operating system search. Windows search is a best example for the data retrieval system. you would have to specify the exact name of the file that you desire. Where are information retrieval systems are like web search engines. The best known is Google. It processes the natural language and produces the output in encompassing the entire set of documents matching the query.

It is very much important in these days to retrieve the data at a faster rate. Earlier there used to linear search mechanisms where in the entire set of documents in the database are read and then sorted according to the query and displayed. This had varied complexities and took greater amount of time compared to the advanced techniques available these days.

In an information retrieval system, the documents are scanned for the query. To decrease the computation time of the system, the documents are scanned only for the repeated key words which are considered relevant to the document. The output displayed sends a feedback as an input for the next query. In this way with every query there is an increase in the performance of the system.

There should be more and more information retrieving systems to reduce the time of searching a document and this is done with the help of indexing.

ISO to Backup and Restore Your Hard Drive

Do you ever calculate the times you have performed operating systems installations? Well, personally, I cannot remember the actual times I have installed Windows for both work and personal. Let me give some rough figures.

Windows 3.11 - 5 times

Windows 95 - 5 times

ISO to Backup and Restore Your Hard Drive

Windows 98 - 50 times

Windows Me - 5 times

Windows 2000 - 5 times

Linux Red Hat - 3 times

Windows XP Pro - 100 times

Windows Server 2003 - 3 times

Windows Vista - 8 times

Honestly, I never enjoy going through the process of installing any of the operating systems. For those who know me, I will most probably be looking at the progress bar during the installation as if I am very interested. However, I am actually very frustrated and hoping that the progress bar could go as fast as it could be.

Attended Installation

Well, some of you may know that the normal installation through the OS CD or DVD (such as looking at the progress bar and clicking several next buttons) is called attended installation and it is possible that you create your own unattended installation using deployment tools. However, I will not be covering the Windows unattended installation.

Unattended Installation

Most companies use Imaging (ISO) to create a duplicate copy of installed operating system so that they can easily install the exact copy of operating system with their corporate settings to every new machine by extracting the ISO.

ISO Images

- ISO is an archive or a duplicate or backup copy of whatever files that you wish to store

In other words, I create ISO images to backup my entire operating system hard drive data.

Hiren BooCD and Norton Ghost to create ISOs

I use Hiren BootCD, the all in one Dos Bootable CD. One of the software included is Norton Ghost, which can be used to create hard disk images known as ISOs.

ImgBurn

ImgBurn is a Windows program and it's free. You can install it and create ISO images or burn the images into CDs and DVDs.

ImgBurn VS Hiren BootCD

The difference between the two is that ImgBurn needs to be installed as a Windows program and undeniably, a good and easy tool to create ISO images. However, if your hard disk is corrupted, you won't be able to use ImgBurn unless you have dual booting. Thus, you need to use HirenBootCD and Norton Ghost to extract your ISO images to the corrupted hard disk.

The Idea

Simple:

1. Complete an attended installation or manual installation from CD or DVD on one machine

2. Install all the necessary programs that you need such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and the likes

3. Perform operating system updates

After performing the steps above, boot your computer from Hiren BootCD and you will come to a screen for you to select the types of software that are bundled. Choose Norton Ghost from the list and from there, you can create an image out of your partition drive.

The ISO file can be stored in your hard disk for easy access but not in the same drive where you install your operating system. If your computer fails to load or startup properly, you can then pop in Hiren BootCD, boot from the CD and restore the ISO file.

The Practice

My own practice is to have at least two partitions, namely C and D.

- C drive will be the drive where I install my operating system and programs

- D drive will be my document drive

- A copy of ISO created from the C drive will be kept in D drive

Benefit

When operating system is corrupted, none of my document files will be affected when I extract ISO into the C drive. Extracting ISO to C drive will overwrite every data in C drive without any warning. However, after extracting the ISO, you will get the same settings and operating system as of the time when you create the ISO.

What's more? You do not have to go through the process of keying the product key, selecting the time zone, installing the drivers and commonly used programs.

Need to Restore Files From a Carbonite Backup? It's Easy!

If you're still researching whether or not the Carbonite online backup utility is right for you, you should know that the process to restore files from Carbonite is easy enough for anyone to understand. Carbonite has made their place in the online backup services market by offering one of the most affordable services available and making it so streamlined that you don't have to be a computer whiz to understand it. The process for restoring your files is made even easier by a software wizard that Carbonite offers.

The first step to restoring all of your files after a major crash or hard drive format is to download the Carbonite software again. Once you do, you will be given two options by the wizard. You will be able to click an option to restore your files later or you will be able to select an option that lets you restore all of your files now. If you select the latter, you will get two more options. Most people will choose to restore all of their files to their original locations, but you will also be able to select specific files based upon user profiles if you like. This option is really for more advanced users, but it is still not difficult.

However, if you only want to restore a single file or an older version of a file, you have options there as well. Since Carbonite is listed under My Computer as a virtual drive, you can open it and navigate it just like any other drive. Once you have opened it, you simply have to find the file you want to restore. Click Restore to send it back to its original location or click Restore To if you want to send it somewhere else. You also have to option to retrieve previous versions of files by clicking the Restore Previous Version option. Carbonite will save older versions for up to three months.

Need to Restore Files From a Carbonite Backup? It's Easy!

However, you have to know about some limitations to Carbonite as well. You will not be able to restore files from Carbonite very quickly if they are huge. A file that is a few hundred megs could take hours or even days depending upon the speed of the servers. Carbonite servers can be fairly slow, but that is how they are able to offer such an affordable price. In the event of a system crash, where you lose all of your data, you may not care if it is slow so long as you get all of your files back. However, if you need to restore an important document very quickly, you may be left waiting for a bit.

Carbonite is not a flawless service, but it is an extremely attractive one. They offer what other companies charge ten times the amount for. You also get an ease of use that is hard to match with many other online backup services. When you put all these things together, you get a great service which appeals to a large group of people.

What is the Argus Safety Database?

The Argus safety database is a key part of the Argus Safety 3.0.1 pharmacovigilance software system. In a nutshell, pharmacovigilance is defined as the monitoring of any possible adverse effects of both herbal remedies and synthetic drugs as they are used.

The digital database is used to help companies ensure compliance with global regulations regarding pharmacovigilance and related activities. As a comprehensive pharmaceutical software system, it supports pharmacovigilance business processes that take place in both the pre- and post-marketing phases.

The Argus database is hosted in a data center that is ISO-9001-certified, and operates according to the security standards promulgated by FDA guidelines. By managing this data center, a pharmaceutical firm or laboratory may obtain maximum physical data security as well as access to effective data backup and recovery procedures whenever these services are needed.

Recover Permanently Deleted Files - How to Retrieve Deleted Files

Do you have a need to recover permanently deleted files? I think we all do from time to time. More often than we'd like do admit we may make little mistakes that can cause rather large problems. We might accidentally delete a file, and then not even realize we've done such a thing until after we find that the recycle bin has been completely emptied.

Now you need to recover permanently deleted files... but how do you do this? Well, first of all, we should dispel the myth of how to recover "permanently deleted" files. You see, nothing is ever really permanently deleted. Sure, it can be a whole lot of hellacious difficulty to find these bits of information, but believe me, they're still there, hiding out somewhere within your hard drive.

But when we struggle with the thought of trying to recover "permanently deleted" files, we often think we may need to be an adeptly skilled computer hacker type geek in order to coax it back from the clutches of our computer. This however, is clearly not so. Think of this... you know how if the FBI or the CIA wants to nab some information from someone out of the person's computer they get it no matter what? It doesn't matter even if the person had completely purged the hard drive and reinstalled the operating system - they still find what they are looking for... it just takes special software to recover "permanently deleted" files and it's as simple as that.

The Lookout app has tons of security features such as antivirus, a firewall, and intrustion prevention. The best part is that they are extremely lightweight so they do not bog down your phone. Lookout out also helps you if your phone is lost or stolen. You can log into the web interface on any computer and track down your phone. You simply click the locate button and it will show where your phone is on map. Lastly Lookout also comes with data backup. It will back up all of your personal data including contacts, photos, video, e-mail, and text messages.

WaveSecure

WaveSecure is another great security app which is similar to Lookout. WaveSecure lets you lock down your phone from the web interface so that it becomes useless if you have lost your phone. You can also display a message and sound an alarm. Just like Lookout you are also able to track down your phone with WaveSecure. You can set an auto-backup or trigger a backup remotely from the website. The one big feature that WaveSecure offers that Lookout does not is the wipe out feature. You are able to log into the web interface and remotely wipe all the data from your phone.

Protector

Protector is another great app but it's different than the previous 2 apps. Protector allows you to password protect any app on your phone, or any feature of an app. It's a great security program that can be very beneficial for many users. Protector allows you to password protect any Android app. SMS, Gmail, e-mail, Settings, Photos, Calendar, Notepad, Chat...or anything else you can even want to put a password on is an option.

You are even able to protect just particular features of apps if you need to. There is no workaround that will put your apps at danger. Even using a task manager won't prevent the apps from losing their protection. If you try to uninstall the Protector app, you need the pin code to do so!

The only complaint with this app is that there is no pin recovery. If you forget your pin you are totally screwed. That's a big gamble so just make sure you have it somewhere.
